How To Be Popular!

by Samantha Jones

Buying a costume for one big night a year is a huge decision. What are you going to wear because it can’t be the same as any of your friends.

If you want to get your money’s worth, buy a costume that you will be able to use year after year.
Lorna Pierson, owner of Custom Costumes, is an expert on what is the popular costumes for every Halloween.

It is all really about the superhero costumes. Batman and Robin are never going to go out of style.  The best part is that all these costumes can be used as a part of a couple too. Like Wonder Woman and Superman? Isn’t Superman supposed to be with Lois Lane?

Mike Comrie and girlfriend, Hilary Duff, were spotted in an Edmonton costume shop picking out Superman and Wonder Woman costumes.

What ever happened to the regular old ghost costume? Well it doesn’t matter because this episode of the Dirty 30 is haunted starting with this news story. Two of my interviews were destroyed and were turned into fuzz after my friends and I went on a ghost tour of Old Strathcona.

Not Haunted is the temporary location of Custom Costumes. Unfortunately it is a short-lived store. Popping up only eight weeks before Halloween and then disappearing the day after. They are open on November 1st but only to sell everything off at 50% and then they close their doors for good until next September.

Calgary Flames Skip Flu Vaccine Lines

by Randee MacArthur

The province is investigating how some Calgary Flames players and their families received the H1N1 vaccine last week at a special clinic with the help of Alberta Health Services.

The NHL team and its medical staff felt players should get the shots to protect against the H1N1 virus because of the risks associated with frequent physical contact with each other and other teams, as well as their frequent travel, said Flames president Ken King.

After the team doctors consulted with officials on the “potential commotion and intrusion” that sending the team to one of the public mass vaccination clinics would cause, most players got their shots on Friday at a medical clinic “under the direction of Alberta Health Services,” according to a statement released by the Flames.

One day later, the province abruptly suspended its clinics because of a vaccine shortage.

Health officials announced on Tuesday that the clinics are resuming on Thursday only for children aged six months to five years, who must show identification to prove their age. On Friday, vaccinations will restart for pregnant woman.

The program will expand to include other Albertans when more vaccine is available from manufacturers.

Famous Chef Visits NAIT Culinary Students

by Randee MacArthur

NAIT culinary arts students learned about keeping it simple while preparing a traditional Tuscan menu with famous chef Giuseppe Mazzocchi yesterday.

The meal consisted of antipasto and a vegetable barley soup. The main course was roasted pork loin and to top it all off, a mouth-watering wild berry chocolate mascarpone cake. (That’s making my mouth water just talking about it..)

Under the watchful eye of Mazzocchi, 53, the student chefs plated dishes for about 100 lunch patrons at Ernest’s fine dining restaurant on the NAIT campus.

Chefs are regularly brought in as guest instructors.

Iron Chef America winner Rob Feenie came last year and in March, Restaurant Makeover’s Chef David Adjey will teach.

Personally, I’ve always wanted to go to Ernests, whenever I walk by it, it always smells so good.

“Ernest’s is recognized as one of Edmonton’s top fine dining experiences, providing outstanding contemporary cuisine and elegant service at reasonable prices. All dishes are prepared and served by Culinary Arts and Hospitality Management students. Ernest’s serves contemporary cuisine with classical influences. Menus showcase student creativity and a diverse selection of regional cuisine made from high-quality local food products. Reservations are required. ” To learn more about Ernests, go to http://www.nait.ca/53178_56160.htm .

School Absence on the Rise with H1N1

by Amy Affleck

NAIT students might not just be protecting their health from the H1N1 Virus, but their grades too. The new policy implemented at NAIT for the H1N1 pandemic plan says that any student showing flu like symptoms will have to stay home for seven days.

This is to prevent the spread of the virus. This is hard for students in many programs at NAIT because of the practical time and exams that would be missed. Read more »

Spooktacular Strathcona!

by Molly McMahon

I recently went on a Ghost Tour of Old Strathcona, where I discovered some of my favourite places on Whyte Ave. are haunted.

The Strathcona Hotel, the Princess Theatre and even the nearby Church all have their own phantoms.

The Strathcona High School is said to be home to several ghosts and not all of them were human. After a man in the 1920’s was rejected several times from the medical program at U of A, he decided to do some experiments on his own. Soon after, all the neighbourhood pets started disappearing. So many animals were buried on the school grounds that it has been nicknamed the “Pet Cemetery.”

Deja Vu All Over Again……..

By Jonathon Hechter

On Wednesday, Eric Clapton had to pull out of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame’s concert in New York after having to undergo surgery for gallstones.

The event is scheduled for Friday October 29 at Madison Square Gardens. Here’s where history repeats itself; Jeff Beck is set to replace Clapton for the show.

This is not the first time that Beck has replaced Eric Clapton.

In 1965, Clapton left The Yardbirds because he thought they were moving too far away from their Blues roots and Jeff beck became the new lead guitar player. Beck was later fired from the band and replaced by Jimmy Page, who went on to form The New Yardbirds, which, of course, would later become Led Zeppelin.

Everyone at NR92 wishes Eric Clapton and speedy recovery, many are wondering how cool it would be if Jeff beck was fired from his Rock & Roll Hall of Fame gig, and then replaced with Jimmy Page.

Stranger things have happened in Rock & Roll.

Donate Blood!!!

by Randee MacArthur

Blood clinics across Canada have been collecting blood from October first until Halloween Day for their Halloween Blood Drive.

In Edmonton, The Blood Clinic is hosting its first ever “Bloody October Radio Challenge” to encourage blood donation throughout Edmonton. It encourages locals from Edmonton to get out and donate blood.

The Canadian Blood Services encourages people to donate as much blood as often as they can. People who are feeling well enough are encouraged to make blood donation a priority this year, especially this winter when people are getting sick throughout October, November and well into the holiday season.

People who are getting a seasonal or H1N1 shot, and still want to donate blood will have to wait two days before they can donate blood, providing they meet all other criteria for giving blood.

Last year over 37,000 teenagers donated blood at Canadian Blood Services donor clinics – these young donors represented almost 9% of all blood donors. This year they’re challenging young donors to continue giving and to help recruit 90,000 new blood donors to keep pace with the demand for blood in Canada.

Enter your kid, brother, or sister into Young Blood for Life, a recruitment program focused entirely on young Canadians. This program depends on student leaders in high schools across Canada to advocate for blood donation with their peers. In addition, Young Blood for Life will launch this Fall and challenges high schools to recruit students, teachers, their families and friends to donate at Canadian Blood Services permanent clinics.

Do something great for somebody else this Halloween, only an hour out of your day and you’ll be saving two or three lives!

Edmonton is AWESOME … seriously

by Lance Fabiosa

Free money, birthday gifts, and Megan Fox are a few things that are awesome. Edmonton is the newest addition to this list.

The Edmonton Journal and The Sun headline with a numerous amount of stories that would question one’s safety or even happiness in Edmonton.  However, Edmontonisawesome.com bridges the gap between you and a beautiful city.  EIA is one of the many cities that have been established under the umbrella of Canadaisawesome by Mumble Magazine.  Patrick Zubiri, a contributor of EIA, strives to put the statement “There’s nothing to do in Edmonton” to rest.

“Every contributor on EIA has a different spin on how they think Edmonton is awesome. Since I’m in photography at NAIT, I bring my camera with me everywhere.  I like to post about everywhere I’ve eaten, anything that’s on my mind or something I find that’s really positive for Edmonton; which in fact, Edmonton has a lot of,” said Patrick Zubiri.

EIA puts Edmonton in a positive spotlight that showcases everything from events, restaurants, and the people who gives our label “City of Champions” credibility.

“I want to push the city to become more of a community out there just to make it better.  It’s already as good as it is right now, it’s just that people don’t know what’s going on in the city.  So with EIA, we hope to fill in the blanks,” said Patrick Zubiri.

Capital City Clean Up Cleaning Up the Butts!

by Sam Jones

If you have ever walked down the streets anywhere in the city you know how bad the litter is here in our city. The worst part is that 35% of that litter comes from cigarette butts. That has already started to change.

Capital City Clean Up is our city’s year-round litter and graffiti clean up crew. In January, they started a new project along Whyte Ave. where 70 ashtrays have been posted up between 109th and 99th St. In July, they added 122 ashtrays to Jasper Ave.

We now know what a successful campaign the “Anti-Butts” program has been. As of last Thursday the news came out about just how much litter along Jasper Ave had been reduced. This comes from Capital City Clean Up Program Manager Don Belanger, “We were able to remove 87% of the amount of butts on the ground from the beginning compared to the end of the pilot. So it was very successful.”

Belanger and the Capital City Clean Up is hoping to expand on that success. They are going to start looking towards the major traffic areas first and that is only if City Council approves the budget. The decision will be made in mid-November if they can move ahead with future plans or not.

That isn’t the only thing in the works. If the budget is approved Belanger says, “If it were in the budget we would look first toward working in partnership with other facilities like campuses, like NAIT.”
